COOLING TURBINE INLET AIR AT POWER PLANTS

Many recently installed turbine/generator systems are installed without turbine inlet air cooling system in order to reduce installation costs and because the capacities were considered adequate in the conditions of that time. In parallel to the need for additional production occurred, energy production capacity of the system can be increased up to 25% especially in summer conditions without a new unit investment by cooling the inlet air. Among the subsequent applications, fogging application is one of the most effective evaporative cooling applications.

For a typical gas turbine, the inlet air temperature to rise from 15ºC to 38ºC means the existing capacity to decrease by 27%. Every 10°C increase in inlet air temperature leads to a power loss of 8%. The advantages of turbine inlet air cooling system can be listed as follows;

1. Capacity increases.

2. Fuel efficiency increases.

3. Principal investment costs are reduced based on the capacity output of the Power Generation Units.

4. Steam and steam turbine power output increase and combined cycle efficiency increases.

5. Eliminates the need for spraying water/steam.

6. Increases basic system efficiency.

7. Extends the life of the turbine.

8. Evaporative humidification also filters the air.

9. No risk of Legionella bacteria formation.
